#5 CLIMATE MITIGATION

Location: SPAIN, Asturias

Leader: Servicio Regional de Investigación y Desarrollo Agroalimentario del Principado de Asturias (SERIDA)

End-user farms: 1 farm, CLAS SAT and 1 farm, CAMPOASTUR

Site Description: These farms are located in Asturias region. The farm from CLAS SAT has 30 adult Holstein cows, 20 calves, and 22 ha for maize and grassland forage self-production for animal feeding for the whole year. The farm from CAMPOASTUR consists of 400 adult cows grazing in 50 ha grassland. They also have some dedicated space (42.5 ha) for crop production (2.5 ha for beans, tomato, lettuce, etc.) and their fodder production (40 ha) to feed the animals. This farm sells its products (beef, beans, vegetables) directly on its website.

Motivation: Sustainable farming management is needed. In particular, better use and recycling of natural resources would ensure farms' agricultural product supply and improve consumers' conception of them in the food value chain.

Technology to test: GHG MONITORING PLATFORM FOR STABLES (tech.#7) - a platform with sensors to monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in stables and other livestock structures - and the BLOCKCHAIN-BASED ENVIRONMENTAL VALORISATION SYSTEM (tech.#9) - a reliable tool to certify the environmental impact of small and medium-sized farms, rewarding the sustainable management of the natural resources.

Expected Outcome: Environmental farm valorisation through the evaluation of soil function as a carbon and nitrogen sink, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and improving land quality.
