#3 BIODIVERSITY PRESERVATION

Location: SWEDEN, Central and Southern Sweden regions

Leader: Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL)

End-user farms: 4 farms, LRF and 2 farms, NATURBETE

Site Description: These farms are located in Southern and Central regions. Three farms have 20-500 ha of dry land crops to grow different kinds of cereal, leys and rapeseed in Southern Sweden; two farms near Stockholm and one in the central part of Sweden with 30-100 ha of High Nature Value grasslands grazed by cattle, water-buffalo and sheep for meat production.

Motivation: Crops are damaged by wild animals, especially boars and deer, which does not allow an efficient and sustainable use of farmland and forests. Also, a biodiversity assessment of semi-natural pasturing is needed.

Technology to test: BEEHIVE PROTECTION AND MONITORING SYSTEM (tech.#5), DRONES FOR FIELD PROTECTION & WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT (tech.#6) and the BIODIVERSITY ASSESSMENT SERVICE (tech.#8).

Expected Outcome: Improved resource efficiency and waste minimisation, resulting in lower costs for the farmers and a lower carbon footprint. Also, the provision of some evidence-based biodiversity assessment methods is needed, resulting in sustainable farming practices and biodiversity preservation.
